It’s hard to know what Ford wants to do more with the GT500, trounce the Camaro or take a good shot at the Corvette. Or, maybe it’s both. It’s the last model to come with Carroll Shelby’s official approval and we have a feeling he would be happy with the outcome. It’s a tire burner, offering up massive amounts of twist through a 5.8-liter engine. Starting with the 5.4-liter aluminum-block V-8 found in the last GT500, SVT bored out the pistons and slapped on a supercharger to create a monstrous, 662-horsepower motor. Enough cannot be said about its drag-strip-calling qualities, but that’s not to say the GT500 is a one-trick pony (such as the National Hot Rod Association-certified Cobra Jet). SVT-designed electronically adjustable dampers and a limited-slip differential help lay the power down in corners. Downforce-generating add-ons keep it pinned to the track and Recaro seats hold you snuggly in place. This is a Mustang that revels in the straights while looking to the corners ahead. We’re sure Mr. Shelby would have thrown it against the best Camaros and Corvettes.
2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
The all-new GT500 comes into the world as the most powerful street-legal Ford ever built, thanks to its incredible supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine that packs over 700 horsepower. This hand-built engine’s 2.65-liter root-type supercharger and air-to-liquid intercooler are tucked right in the V8 engine valley. Mated to this engine is a TREMEC 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. There’s no word about a manual transmission.
Advances in supercharger efficiency allow for massive torque, even at low RPM. Weight is kept to a minimum by ditching iron cylinder liners. Instead, the piston rings ride against a thin layer of wire that is deposited by a CNC arc welder. In order to handle the boost, the head bolts go deeper into the skirt. The heads themselves are CNC ported. They have larger cooling passages and a taller deck for added strength.
Ford has made sure that the new 2020 GT500 has the right equipment installed to handle all of its power. This includes an electronic power steering unit, light-weight coil springs (front and rear), active MagneRide suspension, custom Ford Performance-spec Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, six-piston Brembo brake calipers, and a lot more.
Because this beastly Mustang has more power than any of its predecessors, the 2020 Shelby GT500 interior is breathtaking. The driver is treated to exposed carbon fiber around the 12 inch LCD instrument cluster. All the car’s systems are integrated with SYNC3. An 8-inch Sync 3 touchscreen infotainment is capable of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
There are also two packages that will further the GT500’s performance. The first is the Handling Package that adds an adjustable strut top mount and a spoiler with a Gurney flap. The second is the Carbon Fiber Track Package that features 20-inch exposed carbon fiber wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, adjustable exposed carbon fiber GT4 track wing, splitter with dive plane, and a rear seat delete.
There ya have it, the new 2020 Shelby GT500 is not only the most powerful street-legal Ford but also the quickest street-legal Mustang ever.
