Tipping the scales at around 2,000 pounds-some 500 pounds lighter than the archrival Chevrolet Corvette-the increased output paid massive dividends in terms of performance. Not only did the 289 Cobra prove to be an incredible car to drive and enjoy on the street, it also proved to be highly competitive on the track, where it could easily hold its own against competitors in both Europe and North America.rnrnAccording to Robert D. Walker's Shelby Cobras, Volume 2, chassis number CSX 2095 arrived in Los Angeles in the spring of 1963 and was invoiced to Coventry Motors of Walnut Creek, California in June of that year. Although the car's early history is unknown, by April of 1972 it was owned by Robert C. Able of Eugene, Oregon, who acquired the car from Arthur Johnstone, of Medford. In 1974, the car was repainted dark blue and the interior was changed from black to red. During this time period, the original five-bolt 289 Hi-Po engine was replaced with a later 289-cubic-inch V-8 fitted with two four-barrel carburetors, while its 5.5-inch painted wire wheels were replaced with 7.5-inch bolt-on American Racing wheels. The fenders were also opened up and reshaped for additional clearance at this time, and small, round taillights inboard of the factory units were added. In 1981 Jim Donofrio (misspelled as D'Onnofrio in the Shelby American Automobile Club Registry) of Salem, Oregon acquired the car and by that time it had been repainted black. Donofrio would swap out the 7.5-inch-wide bolt-on wheels with 6.0-inch-wide, chrome-plated Dayton wire wheels with knock-off spinners. He kept the car for over 20 years, finally parting ways with it in the early 2000s. rnrnThe car's next owner was Bill Bryan of Winter Park, Florida. Upon purchasing it, Bryan sent CSX 2095 to noted Cobra restorer Mike McCluskey in Torrance, California, who restored the car to its original configuration, replacing incorrect components and returning the fenders to their contours. A Harrison radiator and aluminum expansion tank were also installed, according to the SAAC Registry, and the interior was reupholstered in red leather. During Bryan's ownership, the Cobra saw extensive use and was reportedly driven in several Cobra tours. rnrnThe consignor acquired CX 2095 in 2020. As documented in the World Registry of Cobras, CSX 2274 was delivered new to a Mr. Clint Sandusky, Jr, in June of 1964 via Noble Motor Company of Danville, Illinois. The Registry chronicles a series of owners throughout the decades, and importantly reports no incidents, crashes, or egregious modifications that plague so many sports racers of the day. In the mid-1990s our CSX 2274 would find its way into a noted Northeast USA collection where it would reside for the next 25 some years until coming into another nifty Northeast USA collection, where we offer you the 289 from today. Once into the most recent ownership, a comprehensive servicing and sorting was commissioned with marque specialist Mark Allin's Rare Drive of New Hampshire. This all encompassing project's final cost tallied nearly $120,000.00, with all systems on the button. Cosmetically the 289 makes a genuine and authentic appearance, nowhere near concours mind you, but looking sharp in all respects, and something a real driver can appreciate. Importantly too, and unlike so many Cobras, CSX 2274 retains its original numbers matching engine, as well as its fitted from new dual quad carbs, and is a MkII example with racking and pinion steering, of which approximately 528 were manufactured. Originality, matching numbers, fully sorted - CSX 2274 is an exemplary example of Carroll Shelby's icon.

his Shelby Cobra CSX4000 is finished in silver with black stripes over black leather upholstery, and its 427ci side-oiler V8 is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes a limited-slip differential, a chrome roll hoop, side exhaust pipes, 15â³ wheels, and Baer disc brakes. The car was ordered from HST Automotive in November 2007. The fiberglass bodywork is finished in Titanium Silver with Diamond Black stripes. Features include a chrome-finished roll hoop, bumperettes, and side pipes. The paintwork and exterior trim are shown up close in the photo gallery below. Aluminum 15â³ Trigo pin-drive wheels are mounted with Cooper Cobra Radial G/T white-letter tires. The car was built with Baer disc brakes.The interior features bucket seats with black leather upholstery, and matching carpeting covers the floors. The doors are equipped with map-pocket nets. A CSX plaque is affixed to the transmission tunnel, and Carroll Shelbyâs signature decorates the glovebox door. Upon completion, the exceptional quality and attention to detail of the comprehensive endeavor was immediately confirmed when the GT500 won a coveted Gold Prize award at the SAAC 47 concours in June 2022. This 1999 Shelby Series 1 is number 263 produced by Shelby American, and it is finished in silver over black and gray leather and powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V8 paired with a six-speed manual transaxle. Features include a black soft top, air conditioning, pushrod suspension, carbon-fiber bodywork, a Monsoon stereo, 18â³ wheels, power accessories, multi-piston brake calipers, heated mirrors, and Shelby-branded floor mats. The Series 1 was designed by Shelby American and was manufactured at the companyâs facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. The carbon-fiber and fiberglass laminate bodywork is mounted on an aluminum chassis, and this example is finished in silver. The interior features bolstered seats with black leather upholstery, gray inserts, and embroidered Shelby signatures. Carbon-fiber trims the shift knob, and amenities include air conditioning, a Monsoon stereo with cassette and CD players, and power windows and locks.The Oldsmobile-sourced 4.0-liter Aurora L47 V8 was rated at 320 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque when new, and the engine bay features carbon-fiber trim. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transaxle made by RBT with ZF components.

/font size = "4"40th Anniversary 427 S/C Cobra Limited production, #18 of 40 Aluminum body 427 C.I. Aluminum engine,  550 HP  Powerful, lightweight, and an American icon, the Shelby 427 Cobra was the brainchild of sports car builder Carroll Shelby. While the original CSX3000 series of 427 Cobras ended production in 1967, the insatiable appetite for Cobras from the public around the world did not. During this time, many companies tried to make similar examples using Shelby's tried-and-true formula of lightweight cars with massively powerful engines but were never true Shelby Cobras. Then in 1996, almost three decades after the last original 427 Cobra rolled off the production line, the new CSX4000 series was born. Now offered by Shelby American, Inc., no Cobra kit manufacturer could offer what the American company now produced: True Shelby authenticity.  CSX4000 series cars were offered in both fiberglass and aluminum-bodied forms, with the aluminum examples being rare, almost doubling the purchase price of the car due to their labor-intensive hand-formed panels. These Shelby Cobras were delivered to authorized dealers as rolling chassis for the final fitment of the engine and transmission, allowing the new owner to choose a power plant and transmission of their choice.  Since 1962, when Carroll Shelby built the first Cobra, many companies have tried to make a copy of this iconic sports car. Most are offered in kit form, and the customer is left to assemble or build the car themselves. Beginning in the late 1990s, Carroll himself decided that he would produce a continuation Cobra, featuring a hand-crafted aluminum body, 4-inch round tube chassis, and many of the same mechanical components as the original 427 Cobras had. In 2002, Carroll Shelby authorized a run of 40 CSX 4000 Cobras to be produced with special features to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first Cobra. This car is #18 of only 40 anniversary Cobras produced.  Exterior features include special "Anniversary Blue" paint, street bumpers with overrides sun visors, wind wings, chrome roll bar, ceramic coated side pipes, and a cooling splitter in the grille opening.  Interior features include leather seats and dash, 40th-anniversary commemorative gauges and floor mats, door pockets, glove box (signed by Carroll Shelby), heater/defroster, ashtray, lighter, and shoulder belts.  The drivetrain consists of an all-aluminum 427 big block engine mated to a big shaft Top Loader 4-speed transmission. The independent rear differential features an aluminum center section housing 3.54:1 gears.  Included with the car is the original M.S.O. signed by Carroll Shelby, build photos, and receipts.  The Shelby CSX cars are the only Cobras to be licensed by Shelby American and are documented and included in the Shelby American Automobile Club World Registry.  This 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 has been meticulously cared for and recently underwent significant maintenance and upgrades. In August 2022, the fuel system received a thorough overhaul, with the fuel cell inspected and fuel cell foam replaced by Fuel Safe, a carburetor rebuild, and the installation of a new fuel pressure gauge and filter.  Upon arriving at Canepa, the cobra was inspected from front to back and given a checklist of what items needed to be addressed. The car was given a full mechanical inspection and servicing as needed, then sent to our detailing department where it was given a full detailing. The blue paint finish was polished using only foam pads to bring a deep luster to the surface. The interior was thoroughly cleaned, leaving it spotless and in excellent condition.  This Cobra is not just a collector's dream; it's a remarkable driving experience with a blend of classic charm and modern reliability. 427 Competition Cobra

In 1965, Shelby American released a more powerful, upgraded version of their already ferocious 289 Cobra - the infamous 427 Cobra. Fitted with a 427-cubic-inch V8 that produced roughly 500 horsepower and a top speed of 165 mph, this was the fastest road-going production car in the world at the time of its release. 

Carroll Shelby intended to race the 427 Cobra in the FIA’s Group 3 GT class, which required the homologation of 100 ‘Competition’ examples built to racing specification. To Shelby’s dismay, only 51 examples were completed by the time the FIA inspectors arrived to verify the homologation requirements, and the Cobra was denied approval to race. The order for the remaining examples was canceled, and the final production number for Competition-spec Cobras concluded at 53, of which only 23 were finished in full race trim and sold to private racing teams. The remaining models were finished as ‘Semi-Competition’ spec examples, built to be road-legal versions of the Competition racing car. 

Now, almost 60 years later, Blue Chip Private Sales is extremely proud to present this 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra Competition Roadster, chassis no. CSX3016. One of the 23 full Competition-spec Cobras, this example was finished in Silver Mink with red, white, and blue stripes, Halibrand wheels, a black roll bar, and a black side exhaust. Sold new in February of 1966 to Ferrari driver Bob Grossman, CSX3016 was subsequently entered as competitor No. 6 in the 12 Hours of Sebring, where it finished 10th overall and first in class for Production Sports Cars over 5.0 liters. Throughout the remainder of 1966, Grossman raced the car in events across the Northeast at tracks such as Cumberland, Maryland; Bridgehampton, New York; Danville, Virginia; and Lime Rock, Connecticut. The car went on to set a new lap record at Watkins Glen, New York, where it later crashed in the rain and retired from racing. 

After passing through the hands of subsequent owners and a restoration by renowned Cobra expert Mike McCluskey in Bright Blue with white stripes, CSX3016 was purchased by a private collector who commissioned a further restoration to original specifications. Delivered to H.R.E. Motorcars, Inc. in Freeport, New York, the proposed work included the dismantling of the exterior, interior, and parts of the chassis and engine bay to fully repair and refinish the car in its original colors. H.R.E. then reassembled the car with refurbished parts and fully detailed it with the correct decals, wheels, and tires as raced by Grossman. This restoration is documented by noted Cobra authority and H.R.E. President William H. Andrews, who also confirmed in a letter the authenticity of CSX3016 as the Bob Grossman Sebring Cobra. The letter also describes the restoration and specifically differentiates this example from other Cobras. The car also benefits from a rebuilt carburetor, a new fuel cell bladder inside a fuel cell containing Mike McCluskey’s logo, and is fitted with the correct batteries and fuel filter. 

Now offered for sale, CSX3016 comes complete with original Halibrand wheels and Goodyear Blue Streak tires, receipts, authenticity letter from William H. Andrews, and restoration documents. An authenticated piece of 1960’s racing history, this 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra Competition would make a fantastic addition to the collection of any esteemed racing or automotive enthusiast.

*1965 Shelby Cobra Recreation*Â In 1961, due to health concerns, Carroll Shelby was forced to hang up his racing helmet and began selling sports cars to racers around the southwest United States. Primarily focused on Maserati, Shelby decided fairly quickly that he wanted to develop his own sports car that would be equally at home on the street and the race track. The formula was simple- Shelby would find a lightweight roadster and place a large American V8 in the front, attach a robust gearbox and tweak the suspension to handle all the extra power. After approaching and subsequently being turned down by multiple car manufacturers, AC Cars out of the UK agreed to supply Shelby with a few of their Ace roadsters. At the same time, an engine program was developed with Ford agreeing to send Shelby a few of their high performance V8s for the project and by mid-1962, the first Cobra was completed. Immediately the car was a sensation and began demolishing competition at race tracks- the engines moved from 260 cubic inches to 289 and finally, in 1965, the 427. For the 427 engined cars, the entire chassis was significantly redesigned and the bodywork was flared to accept wider tires and side exhaust was added on the majority of the cars. Between 1961 and 1968, Shelby produced only 998 Cobras and they have become one of the most sought after collector cars today.Â To meet the demand for Cobras at a more attainable price point, manufacturers began to spring up, producing accurate replicas, that people could frequently build themselves and allowed enthusiasts to customize them in a way that didnât make sense with one of the few original examples. This car is produced by longtime Cobra replica builder Everett Morrison and is finished in Spies Hecker Red. This example has been finished to a very high level- with Halibrand-style knock off wheels fitted and wrapped in high-performance rubber, paired with chrome front bumper over riders and the Cobraâs signature side exhaust snaking out from the engine bay.Â Â One of the wonderful things about the Cobra is the simplicity of the interior and this replica is no exception. Finished in black leather, there is nothing in here that will distract the driver from piloting the car. With just two bucket seats, a tall shifter for the manual gearbox that falls perfectly to hand from the wood rimmed steering wheel, and a host of gauges laid out in front of you, this is faithful to the original car in its simplicity. One special item to note on the interior of this example is a visor, signed by the legend himself- Carroll Shelby!Â Â Sitting under the hood is a stout 351ci Cleveland V8 from Ford, that is topped by an aluminum intake and Quickfuel Black Diamond carburetor. When this engine is paired with a mild performance camshaft, it produces an intoxicating noise out of those side pipes and more than enough acceleration to be exciting every time you press the gas. Open the hood and the engine is adorned with all of the quintessential Cobra bits- with Shelby branded valve covers and a Cobra air cleaner. Power is then sent through a 4-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels- just like how Carroll Shelby designed the original. Sitting out back is an independent suspension out of a Corvette which is a great solution that offers neutral handling and pleasant road manners. At all 4 corners sit double adjustable coilovers that mean you can dial in both the ride height of the car and the shock stiffness if you want to tighten things up before hitting the track.
